California Troops Headed to Border

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has sent members of the California National Guard to the Mexican border to assist the federal government in deterring illegal drug trafficking and immigration.

In an effort to cooperate with President Obamas new border plan, the state will deploy its members of the National Guard to assist federal border agents.

Up to 260 California National Guard troops will be placed along the border by October 1st where they may stay for up to a year. All of these soldiers and airmen will have volunteered for the mission.

Although the state of California is ultimately responsible for securing its border with Mexico, federal officials will help direct the state troops as part of the Obama plan.

This announcement comes during a time of heated national debate about the legality of the tough new immigration laws enacted by Arizona. The Justice Department recently filed a lawsuit in attempt to strike down the Arizona law which calls for immigration checks on those who may have violated the law.
