Obama Signs Immigration Bill into Law

Published on 08/13/2010

President Obama has signed a $600 million dollar border security plan that will send troops and supplies to the Mexican border.

This immigration bill was passed by the House and Senate earlier this week and has now been signed into law. The measure is intended to help agents secure the border and stop the flow of illicit drugs and illegal immigrants into the United States.

The bill, which Obama signed in the Oval Office with Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, will allow the Border Patrol to hire 1,000 new agents.

It will also send unmanned surveillance drones, communications equipment, and more Customs Enforcement agents to the border.

Some Republicans complain that the bill does not significantly increase the number of personal allocated to the Mexican Border.

This bill becomes law at a time when immigration reform has been drawing national attention. Arizona recently passed a very hard-lined immigration law which is currently being disputed in federal court.
